DISCIPLE
"Disciple leads you into a deeper understanding about who you are, who God is,
and what your relationship with God may be."
The above is a quote from The United Methodist Church in Chillicothe, Missouri, USA.
This is what Paignton (Palace Avenue) Methodist Church, Devon, says about Disciple courses
"Jesus' first followers were called disciples. There were the group of twelve whose names
we know and a much larger group of both men and women, some of whose names we know, but
most are now lost to us. They all travelled with Jesus learning from him and eventually
many of them became believers, teachers and proclaimers of the gospel themselves.
The purpose of this modern Disciple course is to develop strong Christian leaders today
through regular in-depth study of the Bible. Disciple making and Christian nurturing are
its goals and it is hoped that all participants will find themselves guided into new forms
of ministry both within the church and within the community."
Since 1999 Christ Church, Woodley, has hosted six Disciple Groups with participants from
the Circuit, other Woodley Churches, and the neighbouring Districts of the Methodist
Church.
Disciple One consisted of 35 weekly study meetings and 'homework' throughout the week.
This was a large commitment and yet, once committed, became easier and a pleasure.
It was called 'Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study' and covered over 70% of the Bible.
(We have run three courses so far with different participants).
Disciple Two was 33 weeks in length and called 'Into the Word-Into the World' and studied
in depth; Genesis and Exodus, Luke and Acts, whilst referring to other books as well.
(Two courses, with different participants).
Disciple Three was also 33 weeks in length and was called 'Remember Who You Are'.
This course covered The Prophets and The Letters of Paul. (Just one course so far).
There is one more course to come and we hope to start that one in September 2008.
It will be 33 weeks in length and called, 'Under The Tree of Life'.
This course will study The Writings in the Old Testament, and The Gospel of John and
The Revelation from the New Testament.
Anyone who has studied Disciple One is
eligible to come on Disciple Four.
